I think most of the reason I liked it so much is that I was always fascinated with numbers. I was so fascinated with numbers that math was my strong suit throughout grade school Not just in the schoolwork involved at that time, but channels on the TV (when you had big console TV's and you had to actually get up off your gluteus maximus, approach the TV, then change the channels), the dial on my mom's washing machine (I had the dial memorized when I was in kindergarten, or as the kids at that school called it then, "junior first"), and the thing that drove my mom absolutely bonkers, speedometers. I used to draw so many different styles of speedometers when I was a kid that my mother couldn't stand it. I filled almost a whole scratch pad with speedometers one time on our way back from Syracuse, NY (six hour drive, just about 300 miles-give or take). She was PO'd, to say the least!

Anyhoo, The Twelve Days of Christmas, to me in illo tempore, was about numbers. This was even cooler than Sesame Street! I'm going to share the five versions I've always enjoyed.

The first version I remember listening to was sung by the Ralph Hunter Choir and part of an album my parents had called RCA Victor Presents Music For the Twelve Days of Christmas. And the back cover had all 12 gifts which "my true love sent to me" (that is, the Lord). I might have been even more amazed that the guy who sang the "six geese a-laying" part sounded a bit like Tony the Tiger. HEY! I WAS FIVE THEN!

Of course, later in life, there were the Muppets and the Chipmunks. The Chipmunks' version of XII Diebus in Nativitate is highlighted, of course, by Alvin eventually letting Dave Seville know in no uncertain terms that he's getting tired in days 8, 9, and 10, with all the Chipmunks messing around in day 11 (Eleven pipers peeping, ten milking jumpers, and a whole bunch of giggling).

The Muppets' version of 12 Days is highlighted (to me) by Miss Piggy's "ba dum bum bum" after the "five gold rings" is sung out. In fact, I liked it so much, that when I was music director at St. Teresa's in Pawtucket (August 1998-June 1999), our children's choir was invited to sing at two different Hasbro locations. My cousin's wife (little did I know at the time she worked for Hasbro) coordinated the event. So, while we did do serious religious Christmas carols (O Come, All Ye Faithful, and the like), we added Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (inserting, on the repeat, such things as "you would even say it glows LIKE A LIGHT BULB!") and The Twelve Days, at which, on the 12th day, I let them do the "ba dum bum bum". It was well-received.

A lesser known version, my mom picked up this record at Ann & Hope, was Tennessee Ernie Ford's Sing We Now of Christmas, which had his own version of The 12 Days, with a chorus to help him out. My highlights of that one were Ford's "two turtle doves" in his best basso profundo, and the run-right-through-em-all top speed 12th day. Not even a pause at "five gold rings!"

The award for the most seriously-orchestrated-and-arranged version of The Twelve Days (that I've ever heard in my 56 years anyways) comes shortly after hearing the Ralph Hunter Choir version (scroll up four paragraphs). This wicked serious but sometimes even haunting version comes from one of the two Firestone albums my parents had. This one was Your Favorite Christmas Carols, Volume 2. (They also had Your Favorite Christmas Music, Volume 4, and two Goodyear albums, The Great Songs of Christmas, Volumes 3 and 4.) The Firestone album featured mezzo-soprano Risë Stevens, tenor Brian Sullivan, the Columbus Boychoir (now the American Boychoir since moving to New Jersey), along with the Firestone Orchestra and Chorus. This version goes through several key changes and finally a modulation, different voices and arrangements for each little phrase (and hardly the same phrase twice after the "five gold rings"). Here are the keys for each "day"...
Days 1 and 2 - E-flat
Days 3 and 4 - A-flat
Day 5 - F
Day 6 - B-flat
Day 7 - E-flat
Day 8 - A-flat (the counterclockwise joy ride of the circle of fifths stops here)
Days 9, 10, and 11 - F
Day 12 - the GRAND modulation to G (the horn parts at the start of the verse and after the "six geese a-laying" gave me goosebumps back then, and still do now).
Give it a listen! Duodecim Diebus begins at about the 30:24 mark.

And on this moment, five minutes shy of entering the seventh day of Christmas, in which the swans are a-swimming ever so gracefully, I say, "good night!"

Happy and blessed Christmas season, and my prayers to all for an IMPROVED 2021.

Quod scripsi, scripsi!
BMP
Brian Michael Pagehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09836644567939527991noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7002745.post-37869886442062351482020-03-10T16:37:00.001-04:002020-03-10T17:19:30.883-04:00The Remainder of Lent

Before I begin my post, any and all prayers for the full recovery of our pastor, Fr. Richard Bucci, will be greatly appreciated. Fr. Bucci was in a very bad car crash on Tuesday, March 3. The good news is that he's coming along very well - better than many expected!

Usually the working agreement is that Fr. Bucci selects the hymns for Holy Mass, while I select the rest (Psalm, Communion, Mass Ordinary, etc.). I have taken over hymn-picking duties until his return. Many of the hymns I have chosen are based on what he chose three years ago and six years ago (the last time these feasts fell in Year A, the year we are currently in).

Been a busy little bee. This is an action-packed weekend in which we have:
- First Friday Mass (Optional Memorial of the Holy Name of Jesus)
- Epiphany (Four ordinary form Masses, three of them with brass, and one extraordinary form Mass).

Starting with this Sunday, we are celebrating Mass in the Extraordinary Form, that is, the Traditional Latin Mass according to the Roman Missal of 1962, on the first Sunday of each month at 12:30 PM. What makes these really special is that the first three of four "first Sundays" are:

- January 5: External solemnity of the Epiphany (the traditional calendar sets Epiphany on the fixed date of January 6, but can be celebrated as an external solemnity on Sunday)

- February 2: The Purification of Mary (name changed to "Presentation of the Lord" in the modern liturgical calendar, but the Roman Gradual propers are pretty much the same)

- April 5: Palm Sunday

March 1, the First Sunday of Lent, is the only numbered Sunday of any season in this four-month span.

So, without further ado...

Finally, I decided to break down and post something here that's not merely a music list.

This weekend, we sang hymns relating to angels. One of them related particularly to St. Michael the Archangel. Another related to Michael and his cohorts Raphael and Gabriel. This was because this day (September 29 as I write this post) is also the feast of the Archangels SS. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael (or in the Extraordinary Form, St. Michael the Archangel, or in the Anglican calendar, St. Michael and All Angels).

Our recessional hymn has seen its way into some (not many) Catholic hymnals. That is Ye Holy Angels Bright, set to the tune "Darwall's 148th" (widely known with Rejoice, the Lord is King).

Our hymn after Communion (call it a meditation hymn, hymn of praise, hymn after Communion, whatever), was a nice little 2-verse hymn based on the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel (link to the text in the hymn author's own blog) sung to the tune "Madrid" (widely known with Come, Christians, Join to Sing).

The other two hymns, the entrance and offertory, came from obvious Catholic sources. Yet I've not seen either one in any Catholic hymnal past or present. We had to delve into the Hymnal 1940 to get these gems. These beautiful texts should be in many Catholic hymnals.

The entrance hymn was Christ, the Fair Glory of the Holy Angels, which is a translation of Christe Sanctorum Decus Angelorum by Rabanus Maurus - yes, the same Rabanus Maurus that gave us Veni, Creator Spiritus, from which the familiar Come, Holy Ghost (that's Come, Holy Ghost and not that insipid One Spirit, One Church, which has infested many an OCP hymnal for the last two to three decades) is translated. The tune is the very rousing Coelites Plaudant.

The offertory hymn was Hark, Hark, My Soul! Angelic Songs Are Swelling authored by Fr. Frederick Faber, the Catholic priest who is most widely known for Faith of Our Fathers (not that goofy "A Living Faith" which has infested every GIA hymnal since the 1997 RitualSong) and There's a Wideness in God's Mercy, set to the tune "Pilgrims" by Henry Smart (who is best known for his tune "Regent Square", most commonly associated with the Christmas carol Angels from the Realms of Glory).

WHY, OH WHY are these two hymns of high quality in both text and tune not in any Catholic hymnals? Instead we get One Spirit, One Church, A Living Faith, All Are Welcome, Here Me Is, Lord, Eagle's Claws, and One Fred, One Barney. Enough said... for now!

(Side note regarding Father Faber: over a decade ago, when I was working for the iPadre, I chose both Faith of Our Fathers and There's a Wideness one Sunday when after Mass, a former organist of the neighboring Fall River diocese approached me and asked me, "Hey Brian, what's with all the Protestant hymns, Faith of Our Fathers?" Yes, this was a Catholic organist who posed that question to me. I tried my damnedest to keep a straight "professional" face, if there is such a thing, while explaining to her that Faith of Our Fathers was written by a Catholic priest. I afterward slipped into my van and laughed my head off, sounding like the Joker in the 60's TV series version of Batman.)
