MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

Epiphany (Ordinary Form) - January 4, 2009
Holy Ghost Church, Providence, RI

No, not the Holy Ghost I used to work for!

This Holy Ghost is a parish run by the Missionaries of St. Charles, aka the Scalabrini Fathers. They still have a Mass in Italian each Sunday (as well as one in Spanish).

In late August of 2004, I filled in for the 9:00 English Mass and the 11:00 Italian Mass for George Mancini, the current music director at Holy Ghost. It was the first and only time I ever played an Italian Mass. The organ is a Wicks, augmented by Rodgers (added digital ranks and three-manual console). This organ is fun to play. The only sucky part is having to tune the digital ranks to the pipes on a hot day (the church has no air conditioning, and it was about 90 degrees by 11 AM on the day I played).

This morning I attended the 9 AM Mass in English. Here's the music list for today:

English carol...The first Nowell
Gloria...Mancini (a through composed Gloria that George wrote himself - well written!)
Haugen D'hass...All the ends of the earth
- (NOTE: The actual proper of the day, Ps. 72, is also the seasonal for Epiphany, not Ps. 98.)
Walker/O'Carroll...Celtic Alleluia
Kings of Orient...We three kings of Orient are
- (NOTE: The music during the Liturgy of the Eucharist is stuff I would have avoided.)
Dufford/Schutte...Sanctus and Amen
Adeste Fideles...O come, let us adore him (NOT a memorial acclamation)
Olawski...Agnus
Greensleeves...What child is this
Mendelssohn...Hark! the herald angels sing!

Peace,
BMP
