SOME NOTES:
1. Reminder that Junior and Senior choir rehearsals are resuming. First Senior Choir rehearsal is Tuesday, September 6, and the first Junior Choir rehearsal is Thursday, September 8. Both are at 6:30 in the church.

2. For the months of September and October, we'll be going back to Peloquin's Mass of the Bells for the Eucharist. We'll also be starting a new Alleluia - the setting found in Worship II (#360) by A. Gregory Murray.

3. For the first time since choir season ended, we're starting a new hymntune to teach. This one is the tune LAUDA ANIMA, which is, textwise, Praise, my soul, the King of heaven. The text used here is based on Psalm 103. The tune is old, but new to the people of Holy Ghost.

HOLD ON A SEC, GOD; I HAVE A CALL COMING IN!

Ah yes - the cell phone. As George Carlin once said, "Technology has created these self-important twits." So true.

The cell phone does have its plus sides, you know. I take one with me to my day job, just in case the parish secretary calls to book me for a funeral, or in case my wife calls me up and says "Hi love. We need milk." It's a great little outlet to have on the road.

However, the cell phone also has its minus sides, too. One thing that drives me nuts is the jerk behind the steering wheel that's either all over the place, or driving a good 10-15 MPH UNDER the speed limit - while chatting away on the phone with a big grin, not a care in the world. No! the other drivers have to take on those cares, unfortunately.

Worse is the people that insist on bringing their cell phones to church - and LEAVING THEM ON! Many a time I'll hear a ringer go off right in the middle of Mass, and these people will actually get up, step out, and answer the dang thing. It's almost like saying "Hey God, can you hold on for a second? I got a call coming in!" I mean, if you're coming in to worship God, and receive Jesus Christ in the Most Blessed Sacrament, can't you give him ONE HOUR (not even, in most cases) of your undivided attention? Seriously. Shut the phone off. If an emergency arises, then sure, call 911. Otherwise, let's be more considerate. Give our Lord his undivided attention while at Holy Mass. It's also more considerate for the others around you. One shouldn't have to be reminded during pre-Mass announcements to shut his/her phone off, or have signs at the entrance of the church. Common sense. But unfortunately, it's come to that.

Let's put the "Holy" back into "Holy Mass".

MUSIC for SUNDAY XIX at SAINT AUGUSTINE CHURCH, PROVIDENCE RI

In addition to my regular Masses at Holy Ghost, I played a Sunday afternoon Mass today at St. Augustine Church in Providence. Good sized modern-built church, but with a traditional seating plan, a recently built III/30 Peragallo organ (1996), AND (yes!) an altar rail!

Music was selected by the music director, Paula Fontes (except for Mysterium, Per Ipsum, and Communion music, which she left up to me). She normally plays the other Masses (six of them) while Henri St. Louis (one of Rhode Island's best living organists) covers the 5:30 Mass on Sundays. So, actually covering for Henri, I knew I had some big shoes to fill today! I was honored to take the extra work.

The Peragallo was fun to play. I learned from Fr. Connerton that Henri's favorite stop is the Trompette en Chemade. I didn't try that stop yet, but will soon enough (hopefully, if I get another substitute job there). I particularly like the 32' Soubasse on the pedal. Very reminiscent of the 32' on the Casavant (a big IV/120 tracker) at the Cathedral of SS. Peter and Paul in Providence. I decided on Ralph Vaughn Williams' prelude on the tune RHOSYMEDRE (aka, "Lovely"). I haven't heard that prelude sound so good before, except on a CD that Holy Name schola cantorum member Ralph Pope had given me (Mr. Pope is a big fan of Vaughn Williams). For the postlude, I opened the organ up and went with some of my own impromptu variations on NETTLETON.

Thanks to Paula Fontes and Fr. Barry Connerton for letting me fill in for Henri.

Anyways:

INTRODUCTORY RITES
Processional hymn: ST. CATHERINE - Faith of our fathers, living still
Kyrie and Gloria: recited

LITURGY OF THE WORD
Psalm: Alstott - Lord, let us see your kindness
Alleluia: Mode VI

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST
Offertory hymn: Dufford - Be Not Afraid (all the other selections were really good, so I won't complain)
Sanctus: Vermulst - People's Mass
Mysterium Fidei and Per Ipsum: Danish

COMMUNION RITE
Lord's Prayer: recited
Agnus Dei: Mass XVIII
Communion hymn: RENDEZ A DIEU - Father, we thank thee who hast planted

DISMISSAL RITE
Recessional hymn: NETTLETON - God, we praise you

With all this sung, we were still done in less than 40 minutes. Fr. Connerton wastes no time. :-)

THEY CALL THIS "MASS"???

This article from Clayton's "The Weight of Glory" blog is part of a "presentation" (given by a layperson in place of a homily) at St. Joan of Arc Church in Minneapolis.

It led me to surf the St. Joan site a bit further and makes me ponder a few questions like:
1) What kind of a circus are they running in Minneapolis? (Note: this was the question I started my comment with on Clayton's blog)
2) Would this be classified as "Alternative Catholic Worship"? (My diocese had this "Genesis Community" thing going on in the 1980's, as the "alternative" gig, which didn't last long, thank God!)
3) Who is the Ordinary in Minneapolis? and Why would an Ordinary in his right mind allow this kind of crap to happen?
4) What will happen to the 4500 families if the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI cracks his liturgical whip? (Please, Your Holiness, the sooner the better!)
5) Were they the inspiration for certain hot-selling composers of Catholic schlock?

+Peace
