MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

Sunday XXII (Ordinary Form) - August 28/29, 2010

This weekend, I'll be covering at two different churches in two different dioceses. Saturday, I'll be filling in for the venerable Dr. Richard Bunbury at his parish, St. Theresa of Avila Church in the West Roxbury section of Boston, while Sunday, I'll be covering two Masses at St. Brendan in the Riverside section of East Providence.

Anticipated Mass - 5:30 PM - Saturday August 28, 2010
St. Theresa of Avila Church, West Roxbury, Massachusetts

This should be a fun organ to play - Aeolian Skinner, Opus 1114. And I don't have to bite any bullets here! Dr. Bunbury gave me a list of quality music. The pew book: Word and Song by World Library Publications. Here's the list:

Entrance hymn: Lord, whose love in humble service / "Beech Spring"
Responsorial Psalm: setting of the day in Word and Song
Alleluia: Renaissance Alleluia / Bunbury
Offertory: organ piece (TBA - I'll probably do what I do best: improv)
Ordinary: Community Mass / Proulx (Sanctus, Memorial, and Amen); Holy Cross Mass / Isele (Agnus Dei)
Communion: proper antiphon of the day with Gloria Patri from the Roman Missal / Tone 8G, followed by more organ work
Meditation hymn: When love is found / "O Waly Waly"
Recessional hymn: Holy God, we praise Thy Name / "Grosser Gott"

10:00 and 11:30 AM - Sunday, August 29, 2010
St. Brendan Church, East Providence, Rhode Island

Here the selections were left up to me (explanations later). The church and the organ (a two-manual Rodgers with a floating positive installed in 2000) may be modern, and OCP's Today's Missal and Music Issue may be in the pew, but the music will be sure not to reflect that.

Entrance hymn: I heard the voice of Jesus say / "Kingsfold"
Psalm and Alleluia from Respond and Acclaim
Offertory hymn: The Servant Song / Gillard
Ordinary: Heritage Mass / Alstott
Communion hymn: Godhead, here in hiding / "Adoro Te Devote"
Recessional hymn: Praise to the Lord, the Almighty / "Lobe den Herren"

Peace,

HOW OLD IS YOUR CHURCH?

RSCT to Fr. Fernando at The Cloud of Fire (BTW, welcome to the CV Definitive Blogroll).

If you are a LUTHERAN, your religion was founded by Martin Luther, an ex-monk of the Catholic Church, IN THE YEAR 1517.

If you belong to the CHURCH OF ENGLAND, your religion was founded by King Henry VIII IN THE YEAR 1534, because the Pope would not grant him a divorce with the right to re-marry.

If you are a PRESBYTERIAN, your religion was founded by John Knox in Scotland
IN THE YEAR 1560.

If you are a member of the CONGREGATIONALIST, your religion was originated by Robert Brown in Holland IN THE YEAR 1582.

If you are a BAPTIST, you owe the tenets of your religion to your founder, John Smyth, who launched this denomination in the city of Amsterdam IN THE YEAR 1605.

If you are of the DUTCH REFORMED CHURCH, you recognize Michaelis Jones as your founder, because he originated your religion in New York IN THE YEAR 1628.

If you are a PROTESTANT EPISCOPALIAN, your religion was an offshoot of the Church Of England, and your offshoot was founded by Samuel Seabury in the American Colonies in the 17th Century.

If you are a METHODIST, your religion was launched by John and Charles Wesley in England IN THE YEAR 1744.

If you are a UNITARIAN, then Theophilus Lindley is the founder of your church, in London IN THE YEAR 1774.

If you are a MORMON (LATTER DAY SAINTS) your modern religion was started by Joseph Smith in Palmyra, New York, IN THE YEAR 1829.

If you worship with THE SALVATION ARMY, your sect began with Willian Booth in the city of London IN THE YEAR 1865.

If you are a CHRISTIAN SCIENTIST, you recognize that your religion was begun by Mrs. Mary Baker Eddy IN THE YEAR 1879.

If you belong to one of the religious organizations known as "CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE", or "PENTECOSTAL GOSPEL", Or "HOLINESS CHURCH", or "PILGRIM HOLINESS CHURCH", or "JEHOVAH'S WITNESSES", Or any of the MULTIPLE THOUSANDS OF STOREFRONT CHURCHES, then your religion is one of the thousands of new sects founded by men WITHIN THE PAST 150 YEARS!

If you are a ROMAN CATHOLIC, Then you know that your Church was founded IN THE YEAR 33 BY JESUS CHRIST, THE SON OF GOD, AND IT IS STILL THE SAME CHURCH!!!

CATHOLICISM --- THE SURE THING!

UPDATE ON STEVE O

Sorry for the delay in posting. Today is the first chance I've really had to sit and do much of anything over the last two weeks between working long hours and moving. Now we're pretty much all settled in, so here goes...

SteveO has just recently been moved out of intensive care and into a hospital in Bristol, Virginia, that has a special wing that specializes in weaning people off ventilators. Last Friday, he was taken off a ventilator for two hours and his oxygen and carbon dioxide levels were good.

While this seems to be good news, let's pray that his recovery continues, and for his wife Katie as well.

Peace,

MUSIC FOR HOLY MASS

March 6, 2010 - 4:30 PM
Anticipated Mass for the Third Sunday of Lent
St. John the Baptist Church, Pawtucket, RI

It's been a few months since the last time I filled in. Last summer I had filled in at St. John's after the death of our good friend Paul Martin. This Saturday, I'm filling in for the new music director, Robert Giambo. All of the music was of his choosing, except for the Communion, which was at the request of the pastor.

Lord, who throughout these forty days ("St. Flavian")
The Lord is kind and merciful/Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ (Alstott)
I heard the voice of Jesus say ("Kingsfold")
Sanctus/Agnus (Vermulst - People's Mass)
Christ has died/Amen (Danish)
Holy Ground (Beatty)
Organ recessional (to be determined by yours truly - probably last minute)
UPDATE 3/7/10 8:36 AM: Said organ recessional was three variations on Passion Chorale, the first being the very basic two-part piece on it by Flor Peeters (cantus firmus in the tenor) from his Little Organ Book, the other two were my own (one with cantus firmus in the pedal, the other with the melody on top, but with a snarky impromptu reharmonization).

Peace,
