ANOTHER FAVORITE AMONGST NEW ENGLAND PRELATES

Providence native (and once an auxiliary bishop there) and currently Worcester's bishop, Bishop Robert J. McManus had this to say to the folk at Holy Cross College after renting space for a program held by the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy, with workshops by Planned (barf) Parenthood and NARAL (RSCT to Amy Welborn):

A controversy has arisen at the College of the Holy Cross that has resulted from the College’s renting space for a conference sponsored by the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy. The conference involves workshops presented by members of Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts. Both organizations promote positions on artificial contraception and abortion that are contrary to the moral teachings of the Catholic Church.

I have received numerous complaints from people who are shocked and outraged that a Catholic institution like Holy Cross would have anything to do with such groups. They have appealed to me to ask Father Michael McFarland, president of the College of the Holy Cross, to revoke the College’s agreement to rent space to the Massachusetts Teen Alliance. I have done so.

As Bishop of Worcester, it is my pastoral and canonical responsibility to determine what institutions can properly call themselves “Catholic.” This is a duty that I do not take lightly since to be a Catholic institution means that such an institution conducts its mission and ministry in accord with Catholic Church teaching, especially in cases of faith and morals.

The moral teaching of the Catholic Church on respect for life at all stages of its development is manifestly clear. Life is a fundamental good that must be protected and respected from the moment of fertilization to natural death. This teaching is so basic and important that it provides the foundation upon which much of the Church’s moral and social doctrine rests. It is beyond modification and compromise.

Both Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice are notorious for their policies and practices that directly reject the Church’s teaching on artificial contraception and abortion. The College of the Holy Cross should recognize that any association with these groups can create the situation of offering scandal understood in its proper theological sense, i.e., an attitude or behavior which leads another to do evil. Certainly it is understandable how people of good will could interpret the college’s allowing presentations to be made by such groups as truly scandalous.

I strongly contend that the confusion and upset to the Catholic faithful and others that flow from the perception that the administration of the College of the Holy Cross supports positions contrary to the fundamental moral teaching of the Church must be avoided. To deny Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice a forum in which to present their morally unacceptable positions is not an infringement of the exercise of academic freedom but a defensible attempt to make unambiguously clear the Catholic identity and mission of the College of the Holy Cross.

It is my fervent wish that the administration of the College of the Holy Cross will unequivocally disassociate itself from the upcoming conference sponsored by the Massachusetts Alliance on Teen Pregnancy so that the college can continue to be recognized as a Catholic institution committed to promoting the moral teaching of the Roman Catholic church.

Good for you, Bishop!
PS: He likes the extraordinary form, too. I haven't seen anything from him since Summorum Pontificum, but when he was Providence's Auxiliary Bishop, he celebrated that form twice at Holy Name when I was organist there. :)

PICTURES AS PROMISED...

...from the local bus shelters

On December 7, 2006, in my rant about a new sleazy bus shelter ad sign promoting Planned Parenthood's new express clinic (often referred to here as the "quickie clinic") on Providence's East Side, I made this promise: I'll have a pic soon.

Well, I have three from a bus shelter in Pawtucket, just north of Providence. Click on them so you can see them nice and big and read the fine print. (Might not be for the faint of heart.)
(Special thanks to my wife Ann for letting me use her camera and e-mailing me the uploads)

Mind you, this isn't the only couple that models for these ads. Other couples, including two people of mixed races, have also appeared as "spokesmodels".

The name Thayer and Angell and this sleazy picture at first makes me think some lingerie shop on the East Side. However, when you look at the bottom of the same ad, you get this:

You see the address, 183 Angell Street - yeah, at the corner of Thayer Street, that explains the Thayer and Angell. Here's what Duffy and Shanley (PP's ad agency) had to say:
(Providence, RI) July 10, 2006 - Duffy & Shanley's latest campaign for pro-bono client Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island raises visibility for the new Planned Parenthood Express facility which opened on College Hill in early July.
To promote the new location, which offers fast and inexpensive service without the need to book an appointments, Duffy & Shanley created ads to be placed in transit shelters and high schools from July to September.
The "Thayer & Angell," concept of this campaign transforms the location of the new Express site into characters portrayed by the young man and woman intermingled in the ad. To promote the "peace of mind, faster" philosophy of the facility which offers birth control, emergency contraception, pregnancy testing, HIV/AIDS testing and counseling, STI screening and treatment, the ads needed to be provocative, to gain attention of the young audience.

Deceiving, isn't it (not to mention their missive above says that the signs will be up from July to September, and here it is January and the damn things are still spreading like a bad virus)? Sickening, isn't it? Want to hear something sick? The following are the educational facilities that this quickie clinic is in very close proximity to (one mile or less):
Brown University (Rhode Island's Ivy League college)
Rhode Island School of Design (Rhode Island's big art college)
You think that's bad, you also have (in the same area, mind you):
Lincoln School (an all-girls college prep school for pre-Kindergarten to grade 12)
Wheeler School (a co-ed college prep school for pre-Kindergarten to grade 12)
Moses Brown School (right up the street from Wheeler, another co-ed college prep school for pre-Kindergarten to grade 12)
Hope High School (one of Providence's public high schools).

Nice thing to teach our children? I think not! Sick frickin' sleazebags!

Terrible Truth Exposed

Hat tip to CPT Tom at Corning Curmudgeon who is carrying this story. He in turn hat tips Mary of Against All Heresies who posted the letter/story.

Representative Ted Harvey, Colorado State Legislature, sickened by the fact that one of the last resolutions in the legistature's session, carried by the House Majority Leader Alice Madden, would be honoring the 90th anniversary of Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains. Representative Harvey was disgusted:

As a strong pro-life legislator I was disgusted by the idea that we would pass a resolution honoring this 90 year legacy of genocide. I drove home that night wondering what I could say that might pierce the darkness during the debate on this heinous resolution.

What he found was Gianna Jessen, an abortion survivor:

She then began to give her testimony. When her biological mother was 17 years old and 7 ½ months pregnant she went to a Planned Parenthood clinic to have an abortion. As God would have it, the abortion failed and a beautiful two-pound baby girl was brought into the world. Unfortunately, she was born with cerebral palsy and the doctors thought that she would never survive. The doctors were wrong. Imagine the timing! A survivor of a Planned Parenthood abortion arrived in town just days before the Colorado House of Representatives was to celebrate Planned Parenthood's "wonderful" work.

He arranged for Gianna to talk at the Legistature, not letting anyone know she was there to talk about her "experience" with Planned Parenthood, but rather on her work as a Cerebral Palsy activist. Then, he sprung the trap during his speach on the floor.

This is a great article and a great moment in the fight against the anti-life movement. Go read it....
