AH YES, THE INFAMOUS DIVERSITY COUNCIL

All in the name of "diversity"... Paul Nichols gives quite the fair assessment:

You want REAL diversity in your parish Mass schedule? Let St. John Cantius in Chicago be your guide:
Saturday (Anticipated) 5 PM in English
Sunday:
7:30 Tridentine Low Mass
9:00 English (BTW, the folks at Cantius don't screw around - the bulletin lists the hymns for 9:00 Mass. They use WLP's Seasonal Missalette and use only quality hymns. The Mass chants are generally Mass XVIII for this Mass.)
11:00 Latin (Ordinary Form)
12:30 Tridentine High Mass

CANTIUS WEBSITE REVAMPED

St. John Cantius Church in Chicago, the church with multiple Masses in both the Ordinary and Extraordinary form, has revamped their website quite nicely.

The Masses are no longer referred to as Normativa and Tridentine, but Mass in the Ordinary Form and Mass in the Extraordinary Form (though Tridentine does get forced into parentheses). Ordinary Form and Extraordinary Form are the designations given by our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI in his motu proprio Summorum Pontificum.

The music section REALLY got revamped, now naming staff to go along with all them choirs they have, and the FOUR pipe organs in the church:

1. An Oberlinger continuo (or "positive") organ, a portable single-manual pipe organ. Pipes are self-contained in a small box. The console is also attached to this box.

2. A three-manual Kilgen in the upper gallery (yeah, this church has a double gallery).

3. A two-manual "unit" organ assembled by John Hoverland out of used odds and ends (similar to the chancel organ that William Laws built at Holy Name in the 1960's) in the lower gallery.

4. A single-manual tracker built in Holland in 1860 that is awaiting restoration.

Check it out. Just about every department got expanded upon. Really nice job.

EXTRAORDINARY FORM FAQ

OK, these may look like the Baltimore Catechism (not a bad thing at all) in terms of format, but the Canons Regular of St. John Cantius have come up with an FAQ of sorts on the rules for music in the Extraordinary Form of Holy Mass. Well done (hey, so was the Baltimore Catechism)!

KILLJOYS IN CHICAGO

Hat tip to the Curt Jester and Ward Wide Web.

Apparently a couple of rich yuppies moved into townhouses directly across from the great Church of St. John Cantius in Chicago a year ago. Until now, St. John Cantius never had a problem with ringing their bells every 15 minutes until 11 PM - since 12/11/1898. Thanks to a complaint the rich yuppies filed with the Illinois EPA, St. John Cantius agreed to stop ringing at 9 PM.

"It's the first time in the history of the church this has ever happened," (Rev. Al) Tremari said. "No one's ever complained before."

Gotta have one in every crowd, eh? Anyways, just to prove that the folk at St. John Cantius continue to be the "good guys":

Amos Miller, a longtime parishioner and volunteer, said the church's compromise speaks to the church's desire to be a good neighbor. "The spirit of compromise is important. We try to get along with everyone."

Cathy Ward (of WardWideWeb) calls the yuppies "dunderheads". I simply call them "killjoys". Because it's people like that that take the joy right out of living.

TWO NEW LINKS ADDED ON THE SIDEBAR

Nick and I have taken the liberty of adding two new links on our sidebar.

Last night, I added St. Patrick Cathedral in Harrisburg, where Nick (as he mentioned in his introductory post) is the newly-appointed Director of Liturgical Music. It is fitting that his parish gets added to the blog links. Now - if I was only a fly on the wall to hear the Rutter The Lord is my Shepherd at the Cathedral *sigh*!

Today, Nick added the Church of St. John Cantius in Chicago. This is THE parish that REALLY has something for everybody, and NO! I don't mean "cathedral and pilgrim styles". On a typical weekend schedule they have three Novus Ordo Masses (one in Latin, two in English), and two Latin Tridentine Masses (one Low, one High). Their current weekend schedule is:

Saturday: 5:00 PM - Novus Ordo in English
Sunday: 7:30 AM - Tridentine Low Mass
- 9:00 AM - Novus Ordo in English
- 11:00 AM - Novus Ordo in Latin
- 12:30 PM - Tridentine High Mass

There are several choirs and the music is top notch. Check it out!
