Have you ever heard of "Holy Darkness"? It's a modern song that our parish sings during Advent every year. I hate that song.

Thats good, but I can't expect that from my parish. Some people love that song, but since when is darkness holy? I mean, come on, ask yourself, who's the prince of darkness and who's the Prince of Light?

Despite having a good supportive pastor, we still get requests for the big hits at funerals. I think you and the other readers know which ones I'm talking about. :-)
Two things tend to factor the push for such requests (OK - Be not a wuss, Beagle's things, Gentle woman, etc.), at least at my parish:
1) undertakers keep a very limited list of music that families can request from, and those requests get relayed to me
2) these hymns don't get played at any other Mass and this is the only way some people will get to hear them.
BTW - are you the same Andrew from the RPInet boards?

well i see that his "source" or "inspiration" was St. John of the Cross, so I won't 100% write it off as schlock because I am not familiar with St. John of the Cross's writings/spirituality.
That being said, God is mentioned only once in the text..."God of Silence"? He sure wasn't too silent in the bible stories I remember growing up.... plus complaining to Arthur that whenever people talk to him it's always "sorry this and forgive me that and I'm not worthy..."
