Sunday XXIV and the Patrons of Fornelli

Sunday XIII and XIV, plus First Friday

This weekend marks the beginning of "summer mode", in which the sung Ordinary of the Mass is in English for the next four months (with the exception of one date in September).

The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist

This Sunday, June 24, is the Solemnity of the Nativity of St. John the Baptist.  Because it is a Solemnity in "Ordinary Time", it will trump the normally numbered Sunday of the Year (in this case, the 12th Sunday, or "Sunday XII").  In two of our hymns this weekend we will recall John the Baptist proclaiming the forthcoming Christ.

Sunday X at Sacred Heart

We leave the land of Solemnities for a time and take you to the land of Ordinary Time, or Ordered Time, or as the Roman Missal calls it in Latin, the "Time of the Year".  The Latin version of the Missal (in the Ordinary Form, that is, the most current Missal) calls this Sunday (translated) the Tenth Sunday of the Year, while the English and French versions call it the Tenth Sunday of Ordinary Time.

Ascension through Pentecost at Sacred Heart

Yes, we are fortunate to live in a diocese where the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ is still celebrated on the Thursday that is 40 days after Easter and is still a holy day of obligation.

The Three-Day Weekend in the Octave of Easter

This Friday's Sacred Heart Community Mass is the Mass for Friday in the Octave of Easter.  All hymnody for that day will be seasonal.

Best. April Fools Joke. Ever.

One could say, at least in this year where Easter Sunday falls on April Fools Day (also my son Brian's 25th birthday) for the first time in 62 years, but will happen again 11 years from now, that Our Lord Jesus Christ pulled off the greatest April Fools joke... ever!

Mind you, when Jesus was handed over to be crucified, those that put him to death really thought that once he died he was dead... for good!  "Who wouldda thunk" that on the third day Jesus would rise from the dead?  He said it would happen.  He fooled the non-believers.  He fooled the spiteful (or as modern society calls them, "the haters").

Alleluia! Christ is risen!  The Lord is risen indeed! Alleluia!

Christ, our Pasch has been sacrificed!  Therefore, let us keep the feast!  Alleluia!

Three-Day Weekend at Sacred Heart

This three-day weekend consists of the Fifth Sunday of Lent and the Solemnity of St. Joseph, Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Monday, March 19).

Sunday VI, and Putting the Alleluia Away with a Bang!

This Sunday is the last before Ash Wednesday in the Ordinary Form of the Mass.  Those who celebrate the Extraordinary Form sang their last Alleluias two Sundays ago, as that calendar has Septuagesima, often known as that "little Lent before Lent".

The Three-Day Weekend at Sacred Heart

This Friday, February 2, at 6 PM, we have our First Friday Sacred Heart Community Mass.  On that day, we also celebrate the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, where Jesus is presented in the temple as our light.  The Mass begins with a procession with candles (thus the traditional name, Candlemas).

Yet Another Three-Day Weekend at Sacred Heart

Five of my last six weekends have been three-day weekends.  Not complaining one bit.  Keeps us active, right? Right.
