RUNNING UP THE SCORE

Now here's a score you don't see very often in baseball:

O'MALLEY RED SOX 19, VANN RANGERS 17

That's exactly what happened last night at Fenway!

The Red Sox put up 10 runs in the first inning (six of them driven in by David Ortiz, who hit two three-run homers in the same inning). However, by the sixth inning, the Rangers took a 15-14 lead (they scored eight runs in the fifth, and five more in the sixth).

The lead returned to the Red Sox as Kevin Youkilis parked one in the eighth inning for a three-run homer (he also hit a two-run homer in the fifth). This put the Red Sox back ahead to stay.

Here's the linescore:

1
2
3
4
5
6
7
8
9
R
H
E

Vann Rangers 0 2 0 0 8 5 1 0 1 17 20 2

O'Malley Red Sox 10 0 2 0 2 0 1 4 X 19 17 2

I haven't seen a slugfest like that since 1979, when the (now Rigali) Phillies beat the (now George) Cubs 23-22! Also, the 19 runs that the Red Sox scored is the most since 2003, when they smoked the (now Galeone) Marlins in an interleague game 25-8. In that game, the Sox put up 14 runs in the first inning, and 11 before the first out was even made.

I love slugfests (especially when the Red Sox are on the winning end)! :-)

Peace,

CHRISTUS VINCIT SPORTS

Yesterday, the ultimate three-team trade took place between the Cardinal O'Malley Red Sox, the Cardinal Mahony Dodgers, and the Bishop Zubik Pirates...

Red Sox send Manny Ramirez to the Dodgers, and Brandon Moss and Craig Hansen to the Pirates.
Pirates send equally good left fielder Jason Bay to the Red Sox.
Dodgers send two minor leaguers to the Pirates.

A win-win-win for all three teams. The Pirates, minus Bay, beat the Cardinal George Cubs 3-0. As for the Dodgers game against the Bishop Olmstead Diamondbacks, we'll have to wait till the morning for that score (they're scoreless in the third as I write this - 11:15 PM). However, Nomar Garciaparra was reportedly happy as a pig in the mud to see Ramirez.

The big story (at least right now) is Jason Bay's first game in a Red Sox uniform. Though he struck out twice, Bay also walked twice and was hit by a pitch. Fast forward to the 12th inning - yes, I did say 12th (it was tied 1-1). With two outs in the bottom of the 12th, Bay hit a towering shot that just missed being parked over the Green Monster by inches. Instead, it hit off the mammoth wall and Bay slid into third for a triple - his first Red Sox hit. Next batter: rookie Jed Lowrie. Lowrie hit an infield single, scoring Bay, and ending the game with a 2-1 Sox victory.

WELCOME TO BOSTON JASON BAY!

TURNING JAPANESE

A CHRISTUS VINCIT SPORTS Special Presentation

LAND OF THE RISING SUN EDITION

Two prelates, one from either side of the country, have taken their baseball teams to the other side of the world. Today those teams opened up the regular season at the Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan. Those teams are the O'Malley Red Sox and the Vigneron Athletics.

The Sox have the pleasure of having two Japanese players (Daisuke Matsuzaka and Hideki Okajima), thus having the ability to turn Tokyo into an extension of Red Sox Nation. Not a bad thing!

At 6 AM Eastern time this morning, the Sox and A's faced off. The Sox came from behind twice to win in 10 innings, 6-5. Manny Ramirez hit two 2-run doubles, one of them the game winner. Rookie Brandon Moss hit an RBI single and a ninth inning game-tying homer.

SOX ROCK - even in Japan!

GOOD MONDAY NEWS 1

Red Sox win World Series!

2007 WORLD SERIES EDITION

Introducing the 2007 World Series Champion:

Cardinal Sean Patrick O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston, whose Red Sox swept Archbishop Chaput's Rockies in the 2007 World Series, 4 games to zip. The Sox won their first two games in Fenway 13-1 and 2-1, then won at Coors Field 10-5 and 4-3.

If I'm not mistaken, Cardinal O'Malley is the first Franciscan prelate to have a team within his See win a World Series.

WOOHOO! GO SOX!

Oh, and while we're in Cdl. O'Malley's jurisdiction, what about them Patriots, eh? They not only smoked Archbishop Wuerl's Redskins FIFTY-TWO TO SEVEN, but they set an NFL record for having the most consecutive games where they've scored 30 points or more!

WOOHOO! GO PATS!

BMP

THE ALCS IS FINALLY OVER

World Series starts Wednesday!

WORLD SERIES 2007

While the Chaput Rockies have been waiting around for almost a week trying to figure out who they will be facing in the World Series this year (they swept the Olmstead Diamondbacks 4 games to zip), the O'Malley Red Sox and Lennon Indians were still duking it out. And now an American League Champion has FINALLY emerged:

THE O'MALLEY RED SOX - WOOHOO!

Yup - the Sox smoked the Indians in the late innings to score an 11-2 game 7 victory, and a 4-games-to-3 ALCS victory. The Sox and the Rockies begin the World Series in Fenway at 8:23 PM EDT (another precise timing - LOL) on Wednesday. This is Cdl. O'Malley's second World Series this decade (remember, they swept the Burke Cardinals in 2004), and Abp. Chaput's first World Series ever. Should be interesting.

All I can say is:
GO SOX!

Peace,

CHRISTUS VINCIT SPORTS FLASH!

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL EDITION

Last night, rookie Clay Buchholz pitched a no-no in just his second major league start, leading the O'Malley Red Sox to a 10-0 smokeshow over the Keeler Orioles. Though Buchholz is the 17th Red Sox pitcher to pitch a no-hitter (and the 11th to do so at Fenway), he's the first Red Sox ROOKIE to do so. Too bad they didn't call him up from the minors when the Sox were in New York earlier in the week!

CHRISTUS VINCIT SPORTS NEWS FLASH!!!

Bishop Vann's Texas Rangers Does the Dirty Thirty!

SMOKESHOW EDITION
BRIAN MICHAEL PAGE - CV Sports Writer

BALTIMORE (CV) - Bishop Vann's Texas Rangers responded to a third inning 3-0 deficit by annihilating Cardinal Keeler's Baltimore Orioles with 30 (yes, THIRTY) unanswered runs for a 30-3 victory this evening. Texas scored five runs in the 4th inning, nine in the 6th, ten in the 8th, and six in the 9th to finish off the Orioles - in Camden Yards!

The Rangers are the first team to score 30 runs since the Cubs scored 36 runs 110 years ago. On June 28, 1897, the Cubs beat Louisville 36-7. That was a National League game. The Rangers now hold the American League record.

To add to the Orioles' woes, that was just the first game of a twi-night doubleheader. As I write this, the Rangers are leading 3-1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning. (UPDATE: The Rangers won the second game as well - 9-7)

And I thought my daughter's 28-14 win in all-star softball action was nuts!

MULTI-SPORTS EDITION

MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

Interleague play is done for the year. I kinda like it when the pitchers bat. For me, I love it even more when Josh Beckett hits for the Red Sox. Last year, he was the first Red Sox pitcher to hit a home run since Marty Pattin did it --- in 1972! Well, this year, he hit .182 (3 for 11, including a double and an RBI). Last year, he hit .429 (4 for 7, including a homer and 3 RBI). For that short stint, he slugged .857. WOW!

Anyhoo, here's how each of the teams fared in interleague play:

Maida Tigers and Brown Angels 14-4 (.778)

CANDLEPIN BOWLING

A really cool sport that can be found in the following Sees: O'Malley, Coleman, McManus, McDonnell, McCormack, and Malone, plus one isolated bowling center somewhere in Pilarczyk's turf, and in Eastern Canada.

Ten really skinny pins, a ball the size of a softball (trust me, the ball is not soft), and three shots to knock'em down. You don't clear the deadwood, you play it! Unlike tenpins (normal big balls and two shots to knock'em down) where PBA pros often average 220-plus, your typical candlepin pro averages about 120-130ish. My all-time favorite candlepin pro: Tom Olszta (the guy's a total animal on the lanes - kicks butt and brings in a rowdy audience!). Other favorites include Paul Berger, Steve Puopolo, Charlie Jutras, and Mike Morgan (as well as Mike's late brother Tom Morgan). Big names in the ladies' brackets include Toni-Marie Baldinelli Lopes, Dot Petty, and the late Stacia Czernicki.

Right now, the current candlepin bowling show I watch is in summer mode (er, reruns), but the new season starts in October. What's really nice is that the show, Candlepin Challenge, is on a cable channel in Massachusetts (Comcast 8) that can be watched from your computer. Candlepin Challenge is aired on Saturdays at 11:00 AM, and on Sundays at 5:00 PM (a rerun of the Saturday show). This year's Tournament of Champions (which showcases the bowlers with the best series scores) winner is Bob Whitcomb. Returning champion come October will be Brian Crowell, who won the last match of the regular season a couple of weeks ago.

TRIVIA: Who (besides myself and possibly Domini Sumus) knows what a "half Worcester" (or as the CN8 announcers call it, a "half Wistah") is? :P

CHRISTUS VINCIT SPORTS PRESENTS:

VATICAN EDITION

TRUE STORY: The Vatican is on the verge of forming a soccer team (that's "football" if you're in most countries outside of the United States).

Tarcisio Cardinal Bertone had this to say:
"If, for example, we were to recruit Brazilian players from our pontifical universities we could set up a great team," Bertone was quoted as saying by Rome daily La Repubblica. The cardinal added that the Vatican could also discover young talents in parish teams saying that "in the 1990 World Cup I noticed that 42 players from different national teams originally came from parish recreation centres."

Full story here.

ON A FUNNY NOTE: The Curt Jester has captured two Popes trying out in sports.

Pope Benedict XVI en route to making a superlative save in his tryouts for the Vatican soccer team. Will he be their starting goalie?

Pope John Paul II awaits his turn to take to the ice in a good clean hockey game. Unfortunately the VHL (Vatican Hockey League) never made it off the ground.

American football might be a possibility, and over at the Curt Jester, the Vatican Cardinals might just be a winner. After all, they thrive on Hail Mary passes. Here's their helmet:

BISHOPS IN SPORTS: VATICAN OLYMPICS

The Curt Jester presents a special report:

The VATICAN OLYMPICS

Here are some highlights:

Archbishop Wuerl, newly appointed Archbishop of Washington gets a silver for synchronized mitre placing.

Archbishop Niederauer should medal here for his outstanding act of dexterity:
rubbing his head in a circle, chewing gum, and reading from a prayer book.

BTW, Jeff, feel free to affix the Vatican Olympic Torch (above) to your post. ;)
