OCP MEETS MTV...SORT OF

One commenter on Gerald's blog says the composer is a very good holy priest. OK - so why is he writing such garbage like this? And why does its publisher allow this kind of stuff in its worship aids?

He is a good an Holy priest but his vocation certainly isn't in liturgical music.

If he wants to write contemporary worship music - no problem. But please no music video's using the altar or being associated with the Mass.

BAM! That kind of music shouldn't be associated with the Mass, whether in video form or otherwise. I'll take your word that he is a good holy priest. You're right - liturgical music is NOT his forte. Maybe for some kind of worship outside of Mass, yes. But keep it out of hymnals and missalettes. (That's the big problem - this kind of crap gets into a hymnal or a missalette, something that lands up in a pew and people think it's ok to use at Mass!)

I'm going to be Devil's Advocate here. I'm going to put forth the hypothesis that this will not work at so-called "Euro-centric" churches. I think it will work perfectly well in HBC's (historically black churches) as well as those in the Carribean. This is the type of music that would be found in such places.

I know you would be cringing at a lot of the music one would typically find in, say, a Filipino RC Church, but then again, the Liturgical Music composed there somehow fits (and Fr. Manalo's music is very characteristic of the OPM style, IMHO). I see the same type of analogy here.

For me, personally, I would not be comfortable with this style. It's foreign and alien to me. So if I were to try to pull this off, it would come across as a foreigner trying to do Black Carribean. It would come across as fake and unconvincing, and therefore, would never work.

Just some food for thought to throw out there.

Bri,

The answer to question #2 is simple, and to answer it, I shall quote a song from "Cabaret".

"Money makes the world go around, the world go around, the world go around. Money makes the world go around, that clinking clanking sound, it makes the world go around."

Those who excuse this on the basis of "culture" don't understand the mission of the Church.

The mission of the Church is to evangelize the Church, WHOLE and entire, which happens to include Chant and polyphony.

Why's he writing it? Because he doesn't know better.

While this music isn't appropriate for Mass, it's OK as a piece of religious pop music.
