SURVEY: A TALE OF TWO GATHER COMPREHENSIVES

Ba-da-BING! OUR TWO-THOUSANDTH POST!!!

I'm putting together a new survey here. You can post your answers in the combox.

The survey is in light of the forthcoming CVA episode "Christus Vincit ANYWHERE!" called "A Tale of Two Gather Comprehensives". The survey question is:

WHICH OF THE TWO EDITIONS OF GATHER COMPREHENSIVE IS BETTER (OR THE LESSER OF THE TWO EVILS)?
A. First Edition (1994 - Dark Green Cover)
B. Second Edition (2004 - Maroon Cover)

Since "A Tale of Two Gather Comprehensives" may be done as a series of two or more episodes, I will keep this survey open for at least two weeks, possibly more.

Peace,
BMP

Can't really answer your post, as I've never seen the maroon edition. I used to go to a church that used the green edition. I hated the thing, because the folk band played about 18 songs from that thing- over and over- for about ten years. This included a ten week stretch where the opening hymn was "gather us in". They also sang "gather us in" as the entrance song for Midnight Mass one year. The leader of that guitar band made us buy a new hymnal for eighteen songs- and more than half of them were in the old hymnal.

Finally, though, I flipped through the index to see what else was in the book. I mean, it had over seven hundred pages, there had to be something else. And I was surprised to see that there was. There were a fair few decent hymns in the book. The band just never played them. Apparently there was some- albeit small- effort to make the book comprehensive. So my hatred for the book lessened a little. It was the band, its leader, and their refusal to expand their range for a decade that I truly loathed.

Most of my experience comes with Gather Comp. I (green cover). There is some good stuff in it, but there is also some ... well, bleh-worthy stuff. I cannot stand their Eucharist section. There's not much in there I really like, and I am so glad that the organist at my parish chose to play an organ voluntary during Communion rather than subjecting her poor, hapless Cantors to that dreck.

I do have a copy of the maroon GC, but I haven't really looked through it, much. I do know that TPTB at my parish want to upgrade to GC II, but I'm guessing they are waiting for either funds to become apparent, or for the new English translation to be approved.

Sorry I can't be more explicit than that.

At Holy Cross (where RI Ron is music director), where I covered last week, they use GC1 and Seasonal Missalette.
At St. Leo's (where I do the extraordinary form once a month), they use GC2 (which I only use for opening and closing English hymns, though there are some, not many, Latin hymns in there too).
