GOING CATHOLIC: Six Roads to Rome

A new article in the Christian Century tells of the conversions of Rusty Reno (Episcopalian), Mickey Mattox (Lutheran), Bruce Marshall (Lutheran), Reinhard Hütter (Lutheran), Douglas Farrow (Canadian Anglican), and Gerald Schlabach (Mennonite). The article also examines the decisions of Carl Braaten, Ephraim Radner, and Stanley Hauerwas to remain within their respective Protestant traditions. Excellent article.

I was having a discussion last week about any prominent former Catholics who've now become prominent Protestants? I'm not talking about loonies like Matthew Fox. We have Scott Hahn, Fr. Neuhaus, Clarence Thomas, Mortimer Adler...the list is pretty extensive. Know of any who've crossed the other way?

Not that I know of. But there are plenty who SHOULD leave but won't, or have left in everything but name only...

If they want to leave, let them. A company does better when those who stay really believe in it and work for its goals, even though there are flaws in it. The Roman Catholic Church offers more diverse encounters with God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit than others do. I don't know of many prominant Catholics who switched - does not mean they did not - a number of prominant figures of the 60s age have been thrown out though they stay close to the church in heart. Today's the feast of the Assumtion - Another great Catholic belief and celebration!
