I've sung the Holst arrangement. Absolutely lovely.
I've heard Rutter's arrangement. I enjoy his third verse as opposed to Holst as Rutter has only the men sing it. The "rank on rank the host heaven spread its vanguard on the way" sounds more militaristic that way.
I'll have to check out the Rutter, eh? Of course, in the Holst, the guys take on v.2 "King of Kings, yet born of Mary..." I have to admit, I like the harmony on v.3.
I first learned the Holst as a chorister at age 11 (singing TENOR, while there were still 12 and 13 year old boys singing TREBLE and a couple of 16 year old guys singing ALTO). By my sophomore year in high school, my chorus teacher insisted I was a bass. Now starting to stretch my voice back up a little since quitting smoking.
